Gilmore all but wraps up women’s title; men’s race still wide open

Defending Jayco Bay Classic champion Rochelle Gilmore all but wrapped up the women’s title after scoring her an impressive win, her second of the series, in the Geelong criterium tonight.

And in a fascinating men’s stage, Tasmania’s Sulzberger brothers produced classic team cycling tactics to overcome the threat from super sprinters Greg Henderson and Baden Cooke.  After alternate attacks softened the legs of their rivals it was Bernie Sulzberger who prevailed over Henderson in a photo finish.  Brother Wes took the third podium spot after Cooke suffered a mechanical failure with two laps remaining.

Honda Dream Team grabs three from three

Gilmore wins round 3

Commonwealth Games gold medallist and reigning Bay Classic champion, Rochelle Gilmore has notched up her second win of the Bay Series in round three today, securing the 2011 title with one round remaining.

The Honda Dream Team worked hard throughout the race to ensure Gilmore was in pole position to take the win.

Youngsters upstage senior rivals on dramatic day at Portarlington

Rising stars Tiffany Cromwell and Michael Matthews upstaged their more experienced rivals to take stage wins on day two of the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic in Portarlington.

On what is regarded as the toughest stage of the four day event, the Portarlington course was made even tougher this year by a landscape works near the foreshore that required the field to ride two abreast on a footpath for 200m each lap.

Dream Bay Classic start for defending champion

Commonwealth Games gold medallist, leader of the Honda Dream Team and defending champion Rochelle Gilmore has beaten strong competition to win the first race of the Bay Classic Criterium Series in Geelong today.

Gilmore said today’s win was a perfect start for the team as they work to defend their individual and team titles from 2010.

Impressive wins by two riders of whom different things are expected highlighted the opening stage of the 22nd edition of the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic in Geelong today.

Commonwealth Games road race champion and defending Bay Classic title holder Rochelle Gilmore (Honda Dream Team) captured the women’s race in a hard fought affair with rivalBelinda Goss (Vetta) in a result that many had predicted before the start of the relatively flat 2km circuit around Eastern Park in Geelong.
